Day 7: The Old Country – Was The Grass Greener?

From our 40Days4Israel partner Zev Stub over at janglo.net “So many people I know are connecting with our 40Days4Israel campaign project. Its a simple concept: Your private effort not to complain can do a lot toward acheiving our national aspirations.

Here’s something I was thinking about this morning, as I reviewed the weekly Torah portion: It seems like whenever Israel complains in the desert, they always seem to compare it with where they were before, Egypt. Even 39 years after their exodus from slavery, they compare their miraculous manna food to the “delicacies” they enjoyed in Egypt. The fact that they were being fed meager slave rations by wicked taskmasters who were abusing their bodies totally slips their minds.

There are a lot of reasons why people complain, and almost all of them are bad and harmful. When we olim complain about how certain things aren’t the way they were in the old country, we hurt ourselves and our nation- especially ironic when we chose to leave the places we grew up to seek better lives here.”
